End of Support: Microsoft to Discontinue ‘Cortana’ Virtual Assistant on Windows

Microsoft has recently revealed its decision to discontinue support for the Cortana virtual assistant as a standalone app on Windows, starting in late 2023. However, it’s important to note that this change will solely impact Cortana in Windows, as the virtual assistant will remain available in other Microsoft platforms such as Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms. This shift aims to provide users with alternative tools to fulfill their productivity needs through voice commands, eliminating the need for launching the Cortana app separately.

Back in 2021, Microsoft had already announced the discontinuation of Cortana support for Android and iOS devices. Initially introduced in December 2015, Cortana was intended to bridge the gap between Windows 10 PCs and mobile phones. However, it faced tough competition from rivals such as Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri, ultimately failing to gain significant traction in the virtual assistant market.
