Ajit Pawar’s Display of Strength: Gathering of 40 Leaders in NCP Meeting

Power Play in NCP: Ajit Pawar’s Show of Force with 40 Leaders in Crucial Meeting

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) witnessed a deepening rift as both factions, led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, respectively, called for separate meetings on Wednesday in Mumbai. The dueling meetings saw the issuance of separate whips to party legislators, emphasizing the growing divide within the NCP.

  1. Sharad Pawar’s Meeting and Whip: The Sharad Pawar-led faction of the NCP sent out a whip on Tuesday, urging all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to attend a key meeting scheduled for Wednesday. The whip highlighted the importance of the meeting, which was slated to take place at 1 PM at the YB Chavan Centre in Mumbai.
  2. Ajit Pawar’s Gathering and Show of Strength: Simultaneously, the Ajit Pawar-led faction issued a separate notice, calling for the participation of current and former legislators, parliamentarians, office-bearers, and working committee members. The meeting, convened by Sunil Tatkare, the Maharashtra unit president appointed by the faction, was planned to be held at the MET institute’s premises in suburban Bandra.
  3. Attendee Count and Assertiveness: According to reports, the meeting called by Ajit Pawar saw an impressive turnout, with around 35 MLAs and five MLCs present. Chhagan Bhujbal, a prominent leader from the Ajit Pawar faction, emphasized that over 40 MLAs and MLCs supported their cause, showcasing the due diligence undertaken before their allegiance shift.
  4. Sharad Pawar’s Strategizing: In response to Ajit Pawar’s move to join the Eknath Shinde government, Sharad Pawar appointed Jitendra Awhad as the chief whip. Awhad expressed confidence, stating that additional leaders would join the meeting. As Sharad Pawar arrived at the YB Chavan Centre, he received a warm welcome from several NCP leaders, underlining the significance of the gathering.
  5. Disqualification Requests and Factional Actions: Reports indicate that the Ajit Pawar faction requested the disqualification of Jayant Patil, the state NCP president, and Jitendra Awhad as MLAs, submitting the plea to Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar. Meanwhile, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP filed a petition seeking the disqualification of Ajit Pawar and eight other MLAs who had taken oaths as ministers in the Eknath Shinde-led government.
  6. Support and Pre-Meeting Interactions: Supporters of Ajit Pawar flocked to his residence before the NCP leaders’ meeting, illustrating the backing he garnered within his faction. Notable NCP leaders, including Praful Patel and Chhagan Bhujbal, were seen arriving at the MET institute premises, affirming their allegiance to the Ajit Pawar faction.

The internal power struggle within the Nationalist Congress Party became more pronounced as separate meetings were convened by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions. The attendance of party legislators, the issuance of whips, and the requests for disqualification indicate the intensity of the divide. The outcome of these events will likely shape the future trajectory of the NCP in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
